Positive Behavior Intervention & Support (PBIS)
What is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. It is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students. One of the foremost advances in schoolwide discipline is the emphasis on schoolwide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behavior to create positive school environments. Instead of a piecemeal approach of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings (such as the hallway, cafeteria, and library). Attention is focused on building capacity through a multi-tiered system of support that includes Tier I supports on a school wide level, Tier II supports delivered through small-groups, and Tier III support through individual and wraparound services.
